Fourth Grade
I LOVE teaching fourth graders! For many students, their first real exposure to art and it's processes comes when they begin their fourth grade year. They now get to have an entire hour-long class dedicated just to art. In fourth grade we try to explore as many different mediums and basic concepts as possible, so we can then build on them in their fifth grade year. The excitement they have for exploring these new concepts is refreshing!

Autumn Trees
Our intro to project this year involved basic exposure to the color wheel, color schemes, and shape through creating a bright tree with oil pastels. We used a warm color scheme and organic blended shapes for the beautiful tree, and a cool color scheme with geometric shapes for the background and land. They turned out wonderfully!

American Gothic
One of our projects this year is based off of Grant Wood's American Gothic. The students learned some fun facts about this painting as well as a little bit about what life was like in 1930. They were then asked to "modernize" the piece by replacing the farmer and his daughter with contemporary characters. The resulting pieces were great!
Wondering about retention? Ask your student who the people in the painting really were and how the painting was made.
